Fentanyl Citrate: Fentanyl is classified as an analgesic or opiate agonist. It is a short acting narcotic with a rapid onset and relatively short duration. Fentanyl is used to relieve acute or chronic moderate to severe pain associated with trauma, surgery, heart attack, or cancer. Fentanyl may be used preoperatively for sedation and to supplement anesthesia. It may also be given to reduce anxiety and produce positive cardiac effects in patients with acute pulmonary edema. Side effects from fentanyl may include light-headedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, vomiting, sweating, confusion, disorientation, orthostatic hypotension, and constipation.
